DRUM SET STYLES AND RHYTHMS OF THE WORLD:
DIXIELAND
Jazz originated in New Orleans and then moved to Chicago. This class will examine the roots of jazz with an analysis of the drumming styles of three greats: Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton, and Paul Barbarin.
THE SWING ERA
Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman always had great drummers swinging their bands. This class will focus on three of the best:
Papa Jo Jones, Sonny Greer, and Gene Krupa.
BEBOP
Bebop changed the way drummers approached the playing of jazz. This class will focus on four Bop masters: Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Shelly Manne.
HARD BOP AND COOL JAZZ
Hard Bop and Cool Jazz developed as a reaction to Bebop. This class examines five masters of these two different styles: Philly Joe Jones,
Jimmy Cobb, Roy Haynes, Joe Morello, and Connie Kay.
THE MODERNISTS/FREE JAZZ
By the mid-1960s, jazz had fragmented into many styles. Ornette Coleman the "free" movement in 1959 and by the late 1960's many artists had moved in a similar direction. This class will analyze the styles of four Avant-Garde masters: Rashied Ali, Andrew Cyrille, Paul Motian, and Sunny Murray.
THE MUSIC OF AFRICA
From hand drumming to drum set, this class will focus on African rhythms and their application on the drum set in the music of Salif Keita, Manu Dibango, and King Sunny Ade.
THE MUSIC OF BRAZIL
The rhythms of Samba, Bossa Nova, Partido Alto, Baião, Afoxe, Maracatu and their application on the drum set will be presented in this class.
THE MUSIC OF CUBA
The fundamentals of Afro-Cuban music and the application of the following rhythms on the drum set will be the focus of this class: Bembe, Mambo, Cascara, Songo, Guaguanco, Conga de Comparsa, and Mozambique.
THE MUSIC OF PORTUGAL
This class will examine the traditional Portuguese rhythms of Repasseado, Lhaco, Santa Marinha, Chula and their application on the drum set.
THE MUSIC OF JAMAICA
This class focuses on the Jamaican styles of Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae, Dancehall, and Ragga.
THE MUSIC OF NEW ORLEANS
The Second Line, Mambo, Indian Beats, Zydeco and Cajun styles from New Orleans music will be examined in this class
THE ROOTS OF RAP AND HIP HOP
This class will focus on the roots of Rap. Included will be the grooves of the early days of Rap, Hip Hop and Go-Go.
DRUM & BASS
This class examines the popular and influential style called Drum & Bass
